Root Canals
Endodontic
Therapy
If a cavity or fracture reaches the nerve of the tooth, then the nerve must be treated in addition to the external surfaces of the tooth.
Endodontics is the aspect of dentistry that addresses these types oftreatments, with root canals being the most common.
Common causes of root canals include:
Abscessed teeth
Large cavities and fractures
Cracked roots
Severe tooth pain
Internal tooth resorption
Root canals are one of the last lines of defense against severe tooth infections.
By having a tooth treated with a root canal, you can preserve your tooth for several more years.
Otherwise, the tooth would continue to decompose and ultimately require an extraction.
Preserving your natural tooth is better for the other teeth in your mouth as it will not change your biting patterns.
The Root Canal Procedure
Your root canal treatment will go like most any other type of dental visit. The area will be numbed to prevent any discomfort, and then Dr. Dang will remove all of the infected areas inside of the tooth and root, before medicating it and sealing it off.
Once completed, the tooth will need to have a crown placed over it since it is no longer vital.
If you think you need a root canal, a short exam and x-ray is all you need to have your questions answered.
